Student Senate Resolution Condemning Cut Sports, Passed January 31, 2007

A RESOLUTION CONDEMNING THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT’S VARSITY SPORTS CUTS

1. Whereas: The Ohio University Athletic Department has recently cut funding for 4 varsity sports, Men’s
2. Swimming and Diving Men’s, Indoor and Outdoor Track, and Women’s Lacrosse, and
3. Whereas: This decision was made with no student input or consultation, and
4. Whereas: The Athletic Department has not publicized a budget justification for the cuts, nor have they
5. released committee minutes and memoranda related to the decision, and
6. Whereas: The University constantly espouses shared governance and transparency,
7. Resolved: That the Ohio University Student Senate does not support the decision of the Athletic
8. Department to eliminate the four varsity teams and condemns the lack of student input in the
9. decision making process, and further be it
10. Resolved: That Student Senate disapproves of the unprofessional manner in which the situation was
11. handled, specifically the limiting of discussion at the Town Hall Meeting on January 26,2007,
12. and further be it
13. Resolved: That Senate requests the Athletic Department present to them a budget justification for the
14. cuts, as well as a budget analysis of all considered alternatives; along with all memoranda and
15. meeting minutes pertaining to the decisions by February 19, 2007, and further be it
16. Resolved: That copies of this resolution be sent to, but not limited to: Mr. Kirby Hocutt, Director of
17. Athletics, Dr. Roderick McDavis, President of Ohio University, Mr. Robert Andrey, Associate
18. Athletic Director for Business and Internal Operations, Mr. William Smith, Executive Assistant
19. to the President, Mr. Glenn Corlett, Dean of the College of Business, Dr. Alan Gieger, Special
20. Assistant to the President and Secretary to the Board of Trustees, Dr. R. Gregory Browning,
21. Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr. William Decatur, Vice President for Administration and
22. Finance, Dr. Kent Smith, Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Phyllis Bernt, Chair, Faculty
23. Senate, Ms. Michaela Hahn-Lawson, President of SAAC, Mr. Doug Bolon, Chairman of the
24. Intercollegiate Athletics Committee, Mr. Greg Werner, Head Men’s Swimming and Diving
25. Coach, Mr. Clay Calkins, Head Men’s Track and Field Coach, Ms. Allison Valentino, Head
26. Women’s Lacrosse Coach
